First nightTuesday 4th Feb accommodation and evening meal in Christchurch
Day 1 Christchurch to Lake Tekapo Today we ride the scenic route towards Mt Hutt. The main skiing area for residents of Christchurch. Our ride takes us via the Rakaia Gorge as we head towards the stunning turquoise colour of Lake Tekapo which offers breathtaking views of Mt Cook. This is New Zealand's tallest mountain. Our second nights stay.
Day 2 Lake Tekapo to Invercargill Burt Munro Festival We start today with our route takng us where the scenery changes dramatically as we ride to central Otago to the fruit growing centre of New Zealand, through the Lindis pass along the shores of Lake Dunstan to Cromwell. Then we head to Invercargill and check out the real Indian motorcycle that won the land-speed world record at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967 and was ridden by Invercargill eccentric Burt Munro. “The World’s Fastest Indian”, the movie about Burt Munro was filmed partly in Invercargill, Burt’s home town. Our third nights stay.
Day 3 Invercargill Burt Munro Festival Our fourth nights stay.
Day 4 Invercargill Burt Munro Festival Our fifth nights stay.
Day 5 Invercargill to Te Anau Today we ride to Bluff, the southern most point of New Zealand before we head back towards the Southern Alps riding through Riverton and Manapouri which will take us into the wonderful Fiordland National Park. It won’t be long before you are riding beside the beautiful lakeside town of Te Anau. This will be our sixth nights stay.
Day 6 Te Anau to Milford Sound to Te Anau Today we join the Milford Road for one of the world’s greatest motorcycle rides. This ride has stunning mountains, glaciers, native bush, snow clad mountain tips, The Mirror Lakes and waterfall covered valley are fantastic while also travelling through a one kilometre tunnel one way through a mountain and out into another world. Back to Te Anau at the end of the day for our seventh night stay on tour.
Day 7 Te Anau to Wanaka Heading out of Lake Te Anau and then onto Queenstown, the “adventure capital” of New Zealand. The Kawarau Bridge bungy is home to the original 43 metre bungy jump. This is where AJ Hackett and Henry van Ash started it all. The world’s first and most infamous of leaps is still going strong, with tens of thousands of people bungy jumping each year at the world’s best loved bungy site. We will then be riding over the highest tar sealed road in New Zealand called the Crown Range and then on to the oldest hotel in New Zealand, the Cardrona Hotel. We then head to the picturesque Lake Wanaka. This will be our eights nights stay.
Day 8 Wanaka to Franz Joseph Glacier We continue our ride north through mountain passes and lush rainforest through the Haast Pass renowned as 'The best motorcycling in the world'. You’ll experience beautiful crystal clear lakes, rivers and waterfalls on your way to the stunning pacific coastline on our way to Franz Joseph Glacier. The glaciers are an awe inspiring site and the only glaciers in the world that terminate at rainforest. Amazing seen from the ground and even more stunning from above. Helicopter fly over New Zealand’s most famous glaciers and land at the head of either the Franz Josef Glacier or Fox Glacier. View the incredible natural phenomenon of the glacier as it winds slowly down the carved valleys from its origin in the mountains high above you. Our ninth nights stay.
Day 9 Franz Joseph Glacier to Westport Spend the morning enjoying Franz Joseph glaciers, At Franz Josef village there’s time to visit New Zealand’s national icon, the Kiwi. Located in the centre of Franz Josef is the official home to the incubation and captive rearing programme for New Zealand’s rarest Kiwi the Rowi and Haast Tokoeka. We continue our ride up the stunning West Coast of the South Island to Punakaiki with its magnificent splendour of incredible rock formations and blowholes that were 30 million years in the making. The wild West Coast is renowned for its staggering beauty as the road winds its way through native rain forest, amazing coastline with high mountain ranges on your right and the ocean on your left. Onto Westport for our tenth night stay.
Day 10 Westport to Nelson Today we head inland and follow the Buller River with its wonderful twists and turns through the Buller Gorge, another fantastic ride on our way to Murchison. Then it's over Mt Hope Saddle and down into Nelson which has the highest number of sunshine hours in the country. Sight see the local area with its beaches and lakes, spectacular national parks, vineyards, gourmet cafes and restaurants, art galleries and boutique shopping experiences. If you like beer, you’ll love the McCashins Brewery tour (bookings essential). There is just so much to see and do in Nelson you will not want to leave. Our eleventh night stay in Nelson.
Day 11 Nelson to Whanganui Today we continue North through the coastal bays of Queen Charlotte Drive between Nelson and Picton. This is a truly magnificent ride with amazing views, beaches and native bush. Once in Picton, we board the ferry for our trip to the North Island. We disembark in Wellington and then head north to Whanganui for our twelve nights stay.
Day 12 Whanganui to New Plymouth Today we are riding towards New Zealand’s oldest National Park, the Tongariro. We continue onto New Zealand’s most secluded Forgotten World Highway that also passes through a 180 metre long single lane tunnel. We ride to the iconic and tiny settlement of Whangamomona a small village which was declared a ‘republic’ in 1988. Then the scenic route winds over four mountain saddles, alongside the Tangarakau Gorge to New Plymouth for our thirteenth nights stay.
Day 13 New Plymouth to Raglan Following the coast northward we begin heading inland to waitomo caves where every corner reveals a stunning view across native forest and rugged hills. We then head out to the west coast for Raglan a fantastic surfing town with one of the longest left hand breaks in the world. Our fourteenth nights stay.
Day 14 Raglan to Warkworth Travelling though Auckland city today across the harbour bridge with views of the sky tower and harbour. Our fifteenth nights stay.
Day 15 Warkworth to Opononi We are off up the Twin Coast Discovery Highway. A stunning ride up the West Coast and through the Waipoua forest. Stopping at a Kauri museum along the way which provides a great insight into Northland’s pioneering past. We then carry on through to the home of ancient kauri trees such as Tane Mahuta - King of the Forest. This is the oldest and largest surviving native Kauri tree in New Zealand. Then on to Opononi, the beautiful Hokianga Harbour overlooks waters towards 1000 ft sand dunes in the distance. This will be our sixteenth nights stay.
Day 16 Opononi to coppers beach A great day of riding ahead. This morning we catch the ferry across the Hokianga Harbour and head north following the Twin Coast Discovery Trail through the wonderful forests of Northland heading up to Cape Reinga lighthouse. This is New Zealand’s most northerly point where two oceans meet. Then back down and onward to coopers beach for our seventeenth night.
Day 17 Coopers Beach to Orewa Down the east coast a fantastic ride as we go winding inland and out through bays and beaches to Orewa for our eighteenth nights stay.
Day 18 Orewa to Hot Water Beach Riding back through Auckland once again over the harbour bridge we head southward for the coromandel making our way to Hot Water beach. Our nineteenth nights stay.
Day 19 Hot Water Beach to Rotorua Our next day takes us inland through the Karangahake Gorge. Then we head to the real Middle Earth where you can take a tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set. The idyllic setting for The Shire that featured in Peter Jacksons directed films, The Lord of the Rings. Then it's onto Rotorua, the geothermal hotspot of New Zealand has many attractions to keep you entertained for days. Visit rocketing geysers, boiling mud pools, and hot springs, treat yourself to an indulgent spa therapy. This is our twentieth nights accommodation.
Day 20 Rotorua to Lake Taupo We head to Lake Taupo, the centre of the North Island. It's a favourite holiday playground for North Islanders. Stop for lunch and visit the Huka Falls. Our twenty first nights stay.
Day 21 Lake Taupo to Napier Today we head through the Desert Road, a volcanic plateau. Enjoy stunning views across 3 volcanic mountains, Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom in The Lord of the Rings), and Mt Ruapehu. We are heading for Napier New Zealand's home of Art Deco. Our twenty second nights stay.
Day 22 Napier to Picton Today we carry on heading south through the vineyard country of Hawkes Bay to the winding Rimutakas down to Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. Today we leave the North Island boarding the ferry and heading South arriving in Picton. This will be our twenty third nights stay.
Day 23 Picton to Christchurch From Picton we continue to Kaikoura the Whale watching capital of New Zealand. The Whale watch tour is a unique experience and the sightings of giant Sperm Whales in their natural habitat is an awesome site. We will then continue to Christchurch for our last twenty forth nights accommodation and also our farewell dinner.
